There's been a fair bit of coverage on Biometrics recently, mostly due to the consequences of terrorist attacks. Since then, technology -- such as face recognition -- has been very popular, attracting a lot of grants and funding opportunities. Researchers in the field have been waiting for this, but are now setting out to define global standards. Essentially, some want more sharing of data -- for testing different algorithms, and for increasing the potential of existing solutions. Others prefer to increase the precision of the devices, or boost their scale (i.e. at crowded football matches). The two articles below go into this, and spend a few paragraphs discussing the privacy issues, which have slowly become common-place!
